Cincinnati Commemorates Sept. 11 with USO Tribute Event to Thank Troops

It’s a day no American will ever forget; Sept. 11, 2001. While it marks the anniversary of a terrible tragedy, it also serves as a reminder that our freedoms must be defended.

This Sept. 11, the Cincinnati USO fundraising committee invites you to commemorate the day by honoring members of our military for their service and sacrifice. The USO Tribute Cincinnati event includes a patriotic tribute and an opportunity to personally thank recently injured military heroes and veterans.

Respected local veterans Robert Lindner, one of the founders of United Dairy Farmers Inc., and Richard Farmer, founder and chairman of the board at Cintas Corporation, will serve as honorary veterans at the event. Farmer served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Lindner served in the US Army Air Corp in Saipan and Guam.

“We are humbled by the sacrifices members of our military make for our freedom,” said Karen Cassidy, chair of the Cincinnati USO fundraising committee. “Our event will give attendees the opportunity to personally thank our troops, past and present, for their service, all while raising money for an important cause.”

Proceeds from the event go to USO of Metropolitan Washington for programs benefiting wounded warriors and their supportive families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center.

New Name, Date, Location; Same Great Event
The USO Tribute Cincinnati, formerly the USO Riverfest Fireworks Gala, continues to serve as an opportunity to honor military heroes, and recognize the outstanding contributions Cincinnati has made in raising more than $2.3 million for the USO Metro Washington programs over the past seven years.

This year’s USO Tribute Cincinnati will be held on Saturday, September 11, at the Cintas Center. With a new date and venue, the USO Tribute Cincinnati promises to be an exciting evening that includes entertainment and dinner. Complimentary valet parking will be available.

The Gregory family and the Montgomery Inn remain an important part of the event; this year guests will enjoy delicious appetizers courtesy Montgomery Inn.

Members of the community are encouraged to buy a ticket for a veteran, who will be honored in a special way at the event.

Chip Heidt Returns Home From Afghanistan

Family and supporters gathered to greet him today at Cincinnati International Airport, just outside of security, at 1:30 p.m. Chip has been documenting his experiences with his platoon on the Web site www.chipgoestoafghanistan.com .

A life-sized painting of retired Army Sgt. Richard Yarosh went on display today at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. The portrait, by artist Matthew Mitchell, is a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Yarosh was an honoree at the 2007 USO Gala. The 2009 USO RIverfest Gala Committee is honored to announce that the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, General Peter W. Chiarelli, will be among the honored guests attending this year's event. He is a champion of improving soldier care, and has spearheaded innovative private-public partnerships for health promotion and risk reduction in the ranks and for families. While visiting Cincinnati, he will also swear in new soldiers at Sawyer point during Riverfest and attend the annual Rubber Duck Regatta.

About General Peter W. Chiarelli
General Chiarelli previously served as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and throughout his career he has served in Army units in the United States, Germany and Belgium. He has commanded at every level from platoon to corps.

A Seattle, Washington native, General Chiarelli is a Distinguished Military Graduate of Seattle University, and hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from the school. He also earned a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Washington, and a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategy from Salve Regina University.

Each Labor Day weekend, Cincinnati hosts the nation’s largest fundraiser supporting the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro) hospital services at Walter Reed Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. Held at the Montgomery Inn at the Boathouse on Sept. 6, the sixth annual USO Riverfest Gala will deliver a personal tribute to military personnel by honoring those recently injured in the line of duty.

In just five years, attendees and corporate sponsors have helped raise more than $1 million to support USO-Metro programs. This year’s event is presented by Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Lindner Sr. and Great American Insurance Group, and the title corporate sponsor is Cincinnati Bell.

“Cincinnati Bell is proud to be a part of the USO Riverfest Gala, which is just one small way in which we can thank our troops, who make such a tremendous sacrifice for us all each and every day,” said Jack Cassidy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cincinnati Bell. “I am thrilled that this year’s honorees will again experience an outstanding military tribute and a warm welcome from the people of greater Cincinnati.”

Over the previous five years, 22 military heroes have been recognized and honored at the USO Riverfest Gala. The 2009 USO Riverfest Gala honorees include:

The 2009 USO Riverfest Gala will feature former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Anthony Muñoz as emcee as he returns to lead the “Salute to Military Heroes USO Show.” This year’s entertainment will feature Miss America 2009 Katie Stam and the 82nd Airborne All American Chorus.

The Gala begins at 4 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by a salute to the military and honoree recognition, musical entertainment, a seated dinner and a superb view of the Cincinnati Riverfest fireworks.

For the past five years, committee members have worked tirelessly to make the USO Riverfest Gala a success. Each member has a unique path that led them to become involved in the event. Below is Steve Lee’s story about why he keeps coming back.

“This whole event got started because of a dinner I had with several retired military servicemen. I had seen a television program about Ward 57 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and I asked them what kind of challenged these injured men and women would face going forward. That question led to a five hour conversation that night, and another five hour conversation the next day. After talking to these men, all I could say was ‘How can I help?’

A few weeks later I had the privilege of talking with the President of the USO, Elaine Rodgers, and visited Walter Reed. When I got back, Dean Gregory and I got together and thought the Labor Day Weekend fireworks would be a great time for an event. From there we made some calls, and those people made calls; the first year we had 650 guests and were off to a really good start. Since then we have raised more than $1 million, and all that money helps finance USO-Metro programs, specifically at Walter Reed and Bethesda, for wounded soldiers and their families.

The Riverfest Gala is a way for everyone to support the soldiers. The freedoms we enjoy in this country are paid for by their courage, bravery and blood. This is a chance to visit with and touch a soldier and personally thank them for the sacrifices they make.

The Soldier’s Creed really sums up why I do this event; one line reads ‘I will never leave a fallen comrade.’ They are certainly our comrades, and we will never leave them behind. We can’t let them think for a minute that there aren’t people everywhere in this country that care about and appreciate what they are doing for us. One of the last lines in the creed reads ‘I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.’ We need to make sure all the countries of the world know how the American people feel about our military.

When you meet these soldiers and their families Labor Day weekend it will be one of the best weekends you will ever spend in your life. The smiles on their faces are because they know the people of Cincinnati appreciate them.”

Steve Lee is Senior Vice President at a major financial services firm and has served on the board of directors at USO-Metro for the past four years.

Miss America 2009 to attend USO Riverfest Gala

The USO Riverfest Gala executive committee is excited to announce that Miss America 2009 Katie Stam will be attending this year's event. Guests and honorees at the Gala will be given the opportunity to meet, greet and take pictures with Indiana native Stam on Sunday, September 6 at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.

During her Labor Day-weekend visit to Cincinnati, Stam will also attend a barbeque at the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, she will enjoy the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Fireworks during the USO Riverfest Gala.

Stam is the national goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network and is the official spokesperson for Zerosmoke, a smoking cessation product. Her platform issue for 2009 is promoting community service and involvement.

Raffle to send care packages to troops overseas

The USO Riverfest Gala Committee is providing yet another way to support the troops through a raffle benefiting Operation USO Care Package (OUCP). Raffle tickets can be purchased on our secure Web site for $25 each or three for $50. Each ticket will buy one care package valued at approximately $75 that will be sent to a deployed service member.

The raffle drawing will take place at the Gala on Sept. 6, and ticket holders need not be present to win. This year prizes include:

“I have been involved with this event for the last four years because we are able to personally impact so many service men and women, and their families. Unlike so many other fundraisers, you see the impact your work has immediately. The honorees express such heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for everything we do for them; you can’t help but want to continue working for them.

My role on the committee is to coordinate the logistics for our honorees. This includes communicating with them before the event, organizing their travel and accommodation arrangements, and helping them with whatever they may need once they’re in town.

The most meaningful and touching moments during the weekend occur when we get to hear from the soldiers themselves. These brave young people risk so much for us, yet they are unendingly humble and appreciative of anything that we do for them. To hear someone say that they’ve never felt so proud for doing their jobs is a really remarkable thing, especially coming from someone so young.

This year, I am most looking forward to meeting the new honorees and catching up with the soldiers we’ve honored in years passed. It’s so nice to see how far they’ve come in their recovery and how grateful they still are of the time they’ve spent in Cincinnati.

The event gives us all a very unique opportunity to truly thank the people that fight for our country and our freedoms. An American flag waving in your yard or a yellow ribbon magnet on your car are all expressions of gratitude, but to be able to learn these soldiers’ stories, shake their hands and say “thank you” in person, is invaluable.

It is during these moments that you realize the courage these men and women have does not end when they leave their combat zone. They are dedicated to protecting and serving for as long as they possibly can, and it is the least we can do to let them know how much they’re appreciated.”

Fallen hero returns home to Cincinnati

The USO Riverfest Gala committee would like to express their condolences to the family of Gregory James Missman, who died in Afghanistan from injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device. Army Specialist Gregory James Missman belonged to the 4th Infantry Division, 4th Brigade Combat Team serving in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. He was a member of American Legion Post 72 in Mount Carmel and was a 1993 graduate of Amelia High School. We thank Missman and his family for making the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

“My commitment to helping with USO Riverfest Gala completes a circle then began when I was a very young boy.

My brother and I spent several formative years at Ft. Campbell, KY with our paternal father Tom Evans, a career soldier with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne and veteran of the European theater. Our adopted father, Roy Starr, enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 before finishing high school and was in Honolulu when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

So it seemed natural for me to join the U.S. Army when I graduated from high school. The career I had imagined was cut short, however, after a series of circumstances forced me to spend six months at the Walter Reed U.S. Army Medical Center.

Serving Montgomery Inn ribs and UDF ice cream to the troops closed the circle that began more than forty years earlier when I begrudging left my comrades in arms to return to civilian life. The USO Riverfest Gala and the trips to Walter Reed have given me a chance to shake the hands of those troops whose courage and dedication to country I have admired for so long.

I am so proud of Cincinnati for helping us sell out the USO Riverfest Gala at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse every year. Buy your tickets today; we sell out every year!

Armed Forces Tickets Association (AFTA) Cincinnati was created to help provide arts and entertainment tickets at no cost or at discounted prices for active-duty men, women and children of the United States Armed Forces.

The association members include organizations representing Fine Arts and Entertainment events of Greater Cincinnati and the surrounding areas.

What is AFTA Cincinnati?
AFTA Cincinnati is a volunteer organization whose mission is to say “Thank You” to our active military men, women and their families by making available free or deeply discounted Fine Arts and Community event tickets by partnering with Cincinnati Fine Arts and Civic Community organizations.

Who is eligible?
AFTA is offering the free and discounted tickets to active military personnel and their immediate families, including husband, wife and children/stepchildren.

How does it work?
Eligible personnel will redeem or purchase their tickets at the venue. Military identification must be presented for redemption of tickets. At times, AFTA Cincinnati will receive blocks of tickets which will be made available by email blasts to military groups and to our email list. Subscribe on the website: www.AFTA-Cincinnati.org

Defense Secretary Gates Recognizes USO-Metro for Its Service to Wounded Warriors

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates kicked off the start of the president's summer service initiative "United We Serve" at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) on Monday. The USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro) was one of five organizations that met privately with Sec. Gates.

In the meeting Sec. Gates emphasized that beyond the war effort, there is no greater cause than improving the care of wounded troops and their families. Sec. Gates recognized the participating organizations as model examples of the work that must be done to support wounded warriors and their families. USO-Metro President Elaine Rogers and John Marselle, Chairman of the Board of USO-Metro, were presented with coins to recognize USO-Metro's contribution to the patients, patients' families and staff at Walter Reed. Later Sec. Gates participated in a ceremony and reception in the Mologne House Gardens to thank volunteers.

"The work being done by organizations such as those represented here and by compassionate and selfless citizens across the nation is invaluable in creating an atmosphere that promotes ... fun, optimism and intense rapid regrowth," said Secretary Gates.

Elaine Rogers, president of USO-Metro added, "We are honored to have Secretary Gates make time to recognize USO-Metro and all of our amazing volunteers. It means so much."

The USO of Metropolitan Washington supports service members and their families who are recovering and receiving treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center and Warrior Transition Units at Ft. Meade, Ft. Belvoir and the McGuire Richmond VAMC. USO-Metro serves recovering troops through various programs including:

Special thanks to Cincinnati-based United Dairy Farmers (UDF), which generously donated 810 half pints of their famous ice cream for the Montgomery Inn BBQ at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This is the third year in a row that UDF has sent ice cream to the BBQ for recovering troops. Soldiers and their families enjoyed local favorites such as Cherry Cordial, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate and Butter Pecan; by the end of the three-hour event all of the ice cream had been gobbled up. The BBQ event is being held at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and will serve 500 guests, including recovering service personnel, medical staff and high-ranking military officials.

The 2009 Montgomery Inn BBQ event marks the third year in a row Montgomery Inn is hosting and supplying world-famous Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce, ribs, pulled chicken, coleslaw and Saratoga chips. The BBQ is held in conjunction with the USO of Metropolitan Washington and was developed as a result of Dean Gregory’s relationships from the USO Riverfest Gala held annually at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.

The USO Riverfest Gala executive committee announces the entire Gregory family—Dean and Hedy Gregory; Tom and Pam Gregory; Vickie Gregory; Evan and Terry Andrews and Matula Gregory—will collectively serve as the honorary chairpersons for the largest fundraiser benefiting the USO of Metropolitan Washington, located outside of Washington, D.C. The committee selected the Gregory family for its long-standing support of the USO.

The Gregory family annually hosts the USO Riverfest Gala at their Montgomery Inn Boathouse restaurant location on the banks of the Ohio River. Additionally, the Gregory family hosts an annual barbecue at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., celebrating the Army’s birthday. At the event, hundreds of guests, including recovering service personnel, medical staff and high-ranking military officials enjoy the world-famous Montgomery Inn barbecued ribs, pulled barbecued chicken, coleslaw and Saratoga chips.

“We as a family want to support the USO and host this event because we want to give something back to the individuals and their families who have sacrificed so much,” said Dean Gregory on behalf of the Gregory family. “This is our opportunity to say thank you.”

The Cincinnati fundraiser has raised more than $1.4 million over the gala’s five-year history. The Gregory family plans to welcome attendees to the sixth annual USO Riverfest Gala, honoring U.S. military personnel on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009.

The sixth annual USO Riverfest Gala will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, 209 at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse. Featuring a patriotic tribute recognizing military personnel and honored military guests who have been recently injured in the line of duty, this year’s gala will be emceed by former Cincinnati Bengals and Hall of Famer Anthony Muñoz.

Attendees will be treated to a seated dinner, live entertainment and a spectacular view of the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN fireworks display.

Miss America, Premier Military Choir among Entertainment for 2008 USO Riverfest Gala

Each Labor Day, Cincinnati hosts the largest fundraiser supporting the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro) hospital services at Walter Reed Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. Held during the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN fireworks event, which is again this year being dedicated to the nation’s troops, the USO Riverfest Gala delivers a very personal tribute to military personnel by honoring those recently injured in the line of duty.

In just four years, attendees and corporate sponsors have helped raise more than $1 million to support USO-Metro programs.

“Cincinnati and the USO Riverfest Gala are leading the nation in an outpouring of support for our troops,” said Karen Cassidy, co-honorary and executive committee chairperson. “Looking at this year’s event, we are anticipating an outstanding military tribute that will recognize all military personnel and their families.”

Schneider, U.S. Marine Corps; Staff Sergeant John Borders, U.S. Army, of London, Ohio; Grosbeck native Corporal Daniel Hamberg, U.S. Marine Corps; Staff Sergeant Paul Brondhaver, U.S. Army, Ohio National Guard; U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Ryan Groves of Ravenna, Ohio; and U.S. Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Joseph Bowser of Georgetown, Kentucky, who was awarded the Bronze Star Medal at the 2005 Gala.

USO Riverfest Gala Entertainment and Event Details
The 2008 USO Riverfest Gala will feature a familiar face as the emcee when former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Anthony Muñoz returns to lead the “Salute to Military Heroes USO Show.” This year’s entertainment will feature Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund, the 82nd Airborne All American Chorus and the American Belles, a singing trio reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters.

The Gala begins at 4 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by a salute to the military and honoree recognition,musical entertainment, seated dinner and a superb view of the Cincinnati Riverfest fireworks. Valet parking is included with ticket purchase.

Montgomery Inn to visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center

Dean Gregory, his family and the Montgomery Inn are traveling to Washington, D.C., with a whole host of BBQ sauce, ribs and chicken to serve Montgomery Inn BBQ, kicking off the celebration of the Army’s birthday, Thursday, June 12.

The BBQ event is being held at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and will serve 500 guests, including recovering service personnel, medical staff and high-ranking military officials.

The 2008 Montgomery Inn BBQ event marks the second year in a row Montgomery Inn is hosting and supplying world-famous Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce, ribs, pulled chicken, coleslaw and Saratoga chips.

The BBQ is held in conjunction with the USO of Metropolitan Washington and was developed as a result of Dean Gregory’s relationships from the USO Riverfest Gala held annually at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.

Staff Sergent John Borders, US Army of London, Ohio, is a USO Riverfest Gala Honoree alum, having been an Honoree for the 2006 USO Riverfest Gala. SSG Borders is pictured to the left with is family, wife Mollie and children Brittany and Xander at the 2007 USO Riverfest Gala.

SSG Borders was serving his 4th combat deployment, 2nd to Iraq in his 12th career year when he chose to stay with his men rather than go on Recruiting duty. Just 2 weeks before Staff Sgt Borders and his men were slotted to go home, on January 5, 2006 an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded under his truck. He was quickly transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC from Germany. SSG Borders had broken the tibia and fibula in both his legs, was missing four inches of tibia in the left leg, multiple fractures in both ankles and the left knee, 2 open fractures in his left ulna, contusions on both lungs, some lacerations on his liver and numerous small burns and shrapnel wounds. After 5 weeks of painful surgeries every other day to attempt to wash out and salvage his right leg allowing proper repair to his ankle and foot, he opted for amputation. SSG Borders plans to stay on Active duty in the Army until he retires with 20 plus years.

SSG Borders now has the opportunity to return his family to Tampa/Ocala, Florida area, where his wife, Mollie, was born and raised, but the family needs support to make this a reality. Local efforts are underway to raise funds towards building a specially-adapted home for SSG Borders and his family.

The USO Riverfest Gala executive committee today announced that key contributors, Jack and Karen Cassidy, will serve as the honorary co-chairpersons for the largest USO of Metropolitan Washington fundraiser outside of Washington, D.C. The Cincinnati fundraiser has raised more than $1 million over the Gala’s four-year history, and the fifth annual USO Riverfest Gala, honoring U.S. military personnel is August 31.

“Since the USO Riverfest Gala’s inception, Karen and Jack have been personally engaged in supporting our mission—even welcoming our military honorees and volunteers into their home,” said Elaine Rogers, president of the USO of Metropolitan Washington.. “I am proud to have them serve in the distinguished co-chairpersons’ position and am grateful for their commitment to fundraise for our programs and hospital services.”

Jack Cassidy, president and CEO of Cincinnati Bell (NYSE: CBB), and his wife, Karen, a registered nurse who spent 12 years in pediatrics, are both active members in the business and philanthropic community. Jack Cassidy serves on a number of boards, including the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, and was recently awarded the NAACP Wright Overstreet Award for Education. Karen Cassidy has been involved in many local and national charitable organizations, including serving as the co-chair for the 2008 Pink Ribbon Luncheon and is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Cincinnati. Moreover, through their work with the USO Riverfest Gala, the Cassidys demonstrate their commitment to personally honor the sacrifices made by U.S military personnel and their families.

“The men and women serving our country are selflessly doing what they view as just their job, and we have had the pleasure of getting to know some of these heroes personally over the years of the USO Riverfest Gala,” said Karen Cassidy.

In anticipation for the 2008 USO Riverfest, we are going to be checking back in with our previous Honorees to get an update on on what they’ve been up to since the last Gala. I recently received the following update from 2007 USO Riverfest Gala Honoree, Rick Yarosh, on what has been keeping him busy since September.

"Let's see, where to start! I've been quite busy since being at the Riverfest Gala in September. Right after the event I was able to go home for the first time. The last time I was home was during my R&R leave from Iraq in April 2006. I was welcomed home by a wonderful community in Windsor, New York. People had lined the streets in my small town standing there with candles and signs saying "welcome home". Most of the lawns on the main street were pierced with signs also.

I spent a full month at home with my family and friends. I was also able to go home again for Christmas for another 30 days (the first time in four years), what an awesome experience to be able to spend the holiday with my family.

I've been back to Cincinnati once, for the Opening Day celebration for the Reds. Cincinnati definitely knows how to make an impression on a person.

I've been doing a little bit of speaking, which I love so much. To be able to spread a message and have people really listen, means a lot. I haven't had any recent surgeries. Although, I do have a surgery coming up on April 29. It's not a major surgery, so I'm looking forward to it.

There's really never a dull moment in my life, which is definitely a good thing. I love to stay busy, especially traveling and speaking. The USO brought me up to Arlington, Virginia for a function in March. I was able to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier alongside Jon Stewart.

I also met Mick Foley and Candi Milo as they were also a part of the USO event. I've met some of the most amazing people in the last six months (and before, really since my injury).

I want to say thank you to all of the people that have been there for myself and a lot of the other wounded servicemembers. I know it means a lot to us."

About Rick Yarosh
Specialist Richard Yarosh, U.S. Army from Windsor, New York, joined the U.S. Army as a calvary scout in June of 2004. In December of 2005, he was deployed to Iraq and quickly moved up in the ranks, taking the position as a gunner on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle (small tank). On September 1, 2006, his Bradley was hit with an IED, causing an explosion igniting the fuel cell. The flames immediately engulfed the Bradley and crew. Spc. Yarosh received third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body and lost a portion of his right leg. After spending months in intensive care, he was discharged to outpatient treatment and has spent time receiving physical therapy at the Intrepid Center at Fort Sam Houston. Overall, he has endured in more than 20 surgeries. Spc. Yarosh plans on using his story and experience to help others through hard times. He believes that there is no better reward than the reward that you get from helping others.

The USO is giving retired residents of the Ft. Thomas VA Medical Center a special treat Saturday, September 1. USO Metropolitan Washington President, Elaine Rogers will join Brigadier General Jeffrey W. Foley and current Miss America Lauren Nelson in visiting with residents during a picnic at the retirement home. All three are in town for the 4th Annual USO Riverfest Gala being held in Cincinnati on Sunday, September 2.

Brigadier General Foley was born and raised locally in Cincinnati, Ohio and is a Mariemont High School graduate and recipient of the Key to the Village of Mariemont. He is also a U.S. Military Academy graduate and has received medals for his service in Operations DESERT STORM and DESERT SHIELD. Brigadier General Foley currently serves as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Signal Center and Fort Gordon in Fort Gordon, GA. Joining the General will be current Miss America Lauren Nelson, an Oklahoma native and music student at the University of Central Oklahoma.

The USO Riverfest Gala committee today announced the military honorees who will be recognized at the 2007 USO Riverfest Gala, Sunday, September 2, at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse. Benefiting the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro), each year the USO Riverfest Gala honors all U.S. military personnel and pays tribute to the selected servicemen and servicewomen recently injured in the line of duty. The event was conceived and developed by an all-volunteer committee and is presented this year by Betty & Robert Lindner, Edyth & Carl Lindner and honorary co-chairs Dean & Anne Kereiakes and other generous sponsors.

The 2007 USO Riverfest Gala Honorees include:

• Specialist Sue Downes, U.S. Army of Tazewell, TN
• Specialist Natasha McKinnon, U.S. Army of Ashtabula, OH

Each honoree has a unique story about his or her service to our country, but collectively they share a commonality of dedication and valor. Attendees of the USO RiverfestGala will have the opportunity to meet these outstanding individuals and hear their stories.

Specialist Sue Downes, U.S. Army of Tazewell, TN, deployed to Afghanistan in February 2006 with a military police company. Spc. Downes was part of a convoy of Humvees headed for a humanitarian relief mission in a remote village, when two mines with the added power of mortar and rocket-propelled grenades detonated under the road. She sustained a fractured femur, two shattered kneecaps, shrapnel wounds and suffered internal damage. Her injuries required amputation of both legs and 10 surgeries.

Specialist Natasha McKinnon, U.S. Army of Ashtabula, OH, joined the Army in 2003 after attending Kent State University. Trained as a logistics supply specialist, she deployed to Iraq in June 2005 to perform security duties for convoy missions. As a passenger in a Humvee convoy mission, an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded through the front seat. Spc. McKinnon sustained injures to both her legs, requiring the amputation of her left leg and surgery for shrapnel injuries to her right leg. In 2006, Spc. McKinnon participated in the Paralympics.

Sergeant Nathan D. Toews, U.S. Army of Kingsburg, CA, enlisted in 2003 and trained as a mechanic. Following an eight-month deployment in Iraq, Sgt. Toews was deployed to Afghanistan, supporting the 10th Mountain Division. While serving in Afghanistan, his convoy was ambushed and caught in firefight lasting more than 24 hours, and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) injured Sgt. Toews. In addition to shrapnel that peppered his body, Sgt. Toews suffered a traumatic brain injury and life-threatening injuries, putting him in a two-week coma. His recovery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center has included multiple skull and eye reconstructive surgeries.

Corporal Chad Watson, U.S. Marine Corps of Mount Zion, IL, joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 2004 while attending Indiana University. After only two months in Iraq during 2006, an IED detonated under his Humvee while patrolling Fallujah. Cpl. Watson suffered a traumatic amputation of his right leg, along with shrapnel wounds to his face and right arm. Following eight surgeries, he is receiving physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Cpl. Watson has received a Purple Heart and a promotion for his actions in Fallujah.

USO and Cincinnati Bell to Host Honored Military Personnel at Bengals vs. Colts Game

The USO and Cincinnati Bell are teaming up to introduce military stripes to tiger stripes at the Cincinnati Bengals’ August 31 preseason game against the defending NFL champions, the Indianapolis Colts.

Cincinnati Bell President and CEO Jack Cassidy will host Sgt. Nathan Toews; Spc. Natasha McKinnon; Spc. Sue Downes; Spc. Richard Yarosh; and Cpl. Chad Watson on the field at Paul Brown Stadium. The troops will be given access to Cincinnati Bell’s skybox and will be able to spend time on the field during the pregame.

The service men and women are in town as Honorees for the 4th annual USO Riverfest Gala on September 2.

Never Forgetting the Price of Freedom

Each year, the USO Riverfest pays tribute to individuals that have been recently injured in the line of duty by honoring them at the annual Gala. US Army retired Staff Sergeant Paul Brondhaver was an honoree during our inaugural year, 2004 pictured here receiving recognition from Anthony Munoz and the crowd in attendance.

Staff Sergeant Brondhaver was hit by a grenade while serving in Iraq, receiving shrapnel wounds, but continued to deliver orders to help save the lives of other soldiers. SSG Brondhaver, while retired, is still looking out for his fellow man. He recently introduced Army Specialist Richard Yarosh who also has a miraculous story of survival following a tank explosion.

Let me first say, Thank You!!! What you do on a volunteer basis is amazing. I know many times soldiers and Marines may not have an opportunity to say Thanks, but I know it is appreciated. I realize the work you do can be tiresome and like an emotional roller coaster. You all have a wonderful heart. You are doing your part. Let me know if I can ever help in anyway with anything you ever do. Attached are some photos of Rick Yarosh. I am committed to looking out for Rick for the rest of my life. Rick has many dreams and I am going to be there for him to achieve those dreams. My injuries of 300 holes from metal and bullets, brain contusions, blown ear drums, and a cracked pelvis are nothing to the injuries Rick has sustained. Rick has surgery on his lips, eyes, and hands on August 9th. My hope is he can travel in September. If not, when I do get him here to visit, I want to introduce you to one of my heroes. It takes all of us to make this country great. You are all doing your part, our troops and Rick are doing and did their part, now let's together make sure the rest of America does their part by never forgetting the price of freedom.

Each Labor Day, Cincinnati hosts the largest fundraiser supporting the USO of Metropolitan Washington’s (USO-Metro) hospital services at Walter Reed Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. Held during the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Fireworks event, which this year is being dedicated to the nation’s troops, the USO Riverfest Gala delivers a very personal tribute to military personnel by honoring those recently injured in the line of duty.

In just three years, attendees and corporate sponsors have helped raise more than $800,000 to support United Service Organizations (USO) Metropolitan Washington programs. This fourth annual event is already surpassing expectations, and organizers expect to exceed the $1 million mark for cumulative funds raised.

“The USO Riverfest Gala has a tradition of providing a fitting tribute and patriotic event to the honored military personnel and event guests,” said USO Honorary Chairperson Dean Kereiakes. “The 2007 event is no different, and we are proud to invite all of Cincinnati to join in celebrating our nation’s heroes at the fourth annual USO Riverfest Gala, Sunday, September 2, at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.”

USO Riverfest Gala Entertainment and Event Details
This year’s entertainment will feature 2007 Miss America Lauren Nelson, The Capital Sound Ensemble from the 257th Army Band – The Band of the Nation’s Capital – featuring SPC Vicki Golding, winner of the 2006 Military Idol competition, and the American Belles, an Andrews Sisters-reminiscent singing trio.

The Gala begins at 4 p.m. with a cocktail reception that is followed by an all-military salute and honorees dedication, musical entertainment, seated dinner and a superb view of the Cincinnati Riverfest fireworks. Valet parking is included with ticket purchase.

The USO is a 501(c)(3) charity and receives no government funds and relies on the generosity of the public.

USO Riverfest Gala Military Honorees
Over the previous three years, 12 military heroes have been recognized and honored at the USO Riverfest Gala. Each individual’s tremendous story of bravery and courage is shared, and the event guests have the opportunity to show their appreciation.

Previous Tri-State honorees include White Oak native Lance Corporal Carl J. Schneider, U.S. Marine Corps; Staff Sergeant John Borders, U.S. Army, of London, Ohio; Grosbeck native Corporal Daniel Hamberg, U.S. Marine Corps; Staff Sergeant Paul Brondhaver, U.S. Army, Ohio National Guard; U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Ryan Groves of Ravenna, Ohio; and U.S. Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Joseph Bowser of Georgetown, Kentucky, who received the Bronze Star Medal at the 2005 Gala.

Dr. Dean and Anne Kereiakes Continue Their Dedication to Supporting Troops

Serving as the largest fundraiser for the USO, Cincinnati’s USO Riverfest Gala welcomes Dr. Dean and Anne Kereiakes as honorary chairpersons. Dr. and Mrs. Kereiakes will assist in the planning and execution of the annual Labor Day weekend tradition.

Dr. Dean Kereiakes serves as the Medical Director of The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Center and The Carl and Edyth Lindner Center for Research and Education. Dr. Kereiakes also acts as the Chair of the Executive Committee of The Ohio Heart and Vascular Center and Professor of Clinical Medicine at The Ohio State University.

Anne Kereiakes is active in various Cincinnati civic, cultural and charitable activities, and recently served as chairperson for the 2006 American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Ball. Mrs. Kereiakes serves on the AHA Advisory Board in addition to having active roles in the Indian Hill school system and with the Miami University Parent Council.
